What In The “Woonerf”?

“The popular European traffic-calming “woonerf” (pronounced VONE-erf) is breaking ground in Charlotte’s pedestrian-friendly Elizabeth. Literally translated as “living yard,” this new design curvature enables cars and residents to peacefully coexist by blurring the line between dedicated motorist space and residential outdoor living spaces. This shared use of the roadway will restrict drivers to walking speed with subtle cues like limited vision and lack of sidewalks versus traditional, and more intrusive, speed bumps and signs.”
